Now I don’t know about you, but I like to go through a full body stretch before hitting the courts. In 2015 I had some major back surgery done, mixed results on that, and since then I have been a little more contemplative about my health. Granted, I have not been as proactive on my health as I have taken to a more sedetary lifestyle, more working with computers and writing, and my physical health has taken a back seat. I do a set of streches every morning, it is one of the first things that I do each day. I should do this routine 2-3 more times throughout the day. I will be working towards that goal. However, with that being said, when I go to pickleball I will take the time to do some streching and I will watch people.
As people start arriving and come to play, it is always with a smile and people really seem to enjoy the social aspect of the time spent coming out for pickleball. They find a place to put their things, talk and laugh with pickleball friends and maybe some half-hearted streches before hitting the court for a little warm up hitting the ball for a couple of minutes and then into a game. Hey there have been days that I have done that as well so I know I am not perfect either. With that being said on some of those days I do feel it, a little stiff and sore. Sometimes that soreness last a day or two and I am a little less active because my body “needs a rest”. I know when I was in high school during the last millenia, Stretching and warming up was always emphasized not just before phyical activity but afterwards as well. I am just as guilty as the next person when the game is over, ok bye everybody, jump in the car and go about my daily routine after pickleball. Coffee and a pastry after the physical activity and a job well done. Head home for a shower as a form of therapy and then get settled into whatever I need to do. Sometimes that stiff and soreness creeps in. This season I am going to make it a point to strech before and after the game. I want to get more out of life and overall happiness and well being. This year it is going to be different, right after I finish my coffee and watching some pickleball on youtube.
I am going to be doing a segment on streching, some dos and don’ts. Drop me a line if there are streches that you do or avoid, I am interested in what other people have to say. I know I do streches for my body as I have learned from my physiotherapist, doctors and medical staff that I have had to work with over the last couple of years. Some of those I think a number of people can benefit from. It is good to sweat and feel your muscles moving and working. That shouldn’t stop you from doing other things in your life. Getting into a routine before and after playing any sport will help you play better, play longer and increase your overall happiness in life. We all want to be happier and more active in life. When it comes to stretching , why do we act like little kids being told to brush our teeth before going to bed.
